For most users it's better to use the regular Nixpkgs channel, as always at

   http://nixos.org/releases/nixpkgs/channels/nixpkgs-unstable

since it's rather faster than the Hydra channels, which are generated on the
fly, and the Hydra server might well become overloaded if too many people used
it :-). This is an automatically generated mirror (every 15 minutes) of the
Hydra channel.

There has always been a stable channel:

  http://nixos.org/releases/nixpkgs/channels/nixpkgs-stable

but given the infrequency of stable releases most users are better off with the
unstable channel.
