Hi, I re-installed Perl 5.10 and, indeed, the errors that I reported earlier occur only in the initial bootstrapping phase. When Perl is built with the proper gcc and glibc packages, then the build works just fine. I'm sorry for raising a false alarm. Take care, Peter
