[Nix-dev] Fonts and Nix Packages

Hi,

Here's a tip: if you're using fontconfig-based X11 applications from
Nix Packages (e.g., Firefox), then you might want to put this in your
bash profile:

   export FONTCONFIG_FILE=/etc/fonts/fonts.conf

This will make those applications use the fontconfig configuration file
of your distribution, instead of the one built into the fontconfig
package. Presumably the former knows better where your fonts are, and
might have some other useful custumisation such as hinting changes. So
if you were wondering why Japanese characters weren't being rendered,
why fonts weren't being found, or why your fonts looked so crappy, then
this is the solution.
