I found a more recent (2013) bug with the same error:

Patch was here: https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=706835

So for Cinnamon, deleting lines 29 and 30 of
https://github.com/linuxmint/Cinnamon/blob/master/configure.ac#L29 ought
to work...
