Automatic merge commits (when pushing something to a branch that has
been fast-forwarded in the meantime) make the history gratuitously
non-linear, and thus much harder to follow (both for humans and for
tools like ‘git bisect’).  Furthermore, it makes it easy to push code
that was automatically merged but doesn’t actually work.

Many projects have turned automatic merge commits off, such as
<http://sources.redhat.com/ml/libc-alpha/2009-05/msg00163.html>.
