Thanks, Peter.  Even though you and I disagree on the details, I do still appreciate the spirit of your approach which is to keep the level of intrusive changes to an absolute minimum to respect the intentions of both NixOS and the tool.

I'll give it a try to create a patch, but I'm still pretty new to NixOS so I'm going to keep *all* the input in mind and would appreciate corrections by the more experienced folks here.
