nixpkgs/maintainers/docs/classification.txt

But I'm not sure wether it contains the new SCI * categories

Compared to your idea using mailinglist categories we could also say
let's try the scheme gentoo is happy with (1)

In my opinion it doesn't really matter when
* you can find the source file to a given name
* we add the tags list

I think packages which can be separated by users, use case
(eg audio/ music programs),
everything which belongs to git, ...
should be found within a group.
But that's only my preference because sometimes I want to have a look
what packages are availible given a topic
