While this group is invite only you can subscribe to (public) Google 
Groups by email only. You simply send a message to 
group+subscribe at domain.tld with the subject "subscribe". You will then 
get an email response to which you can reply to to confirm your 
subscription. Once this group is made public it would be nice to add 
this info to the group description so that it is obviously available.
