I disagree.  The reason why I don't like this optimization is that it
doubles
i-node consumption on my main volume, for relatively little benefit.  This
slows down things like rsync-based backup considerably, for example.

 But this is not a reason to have it disabled by default. You'll switch it
off if you don't like it.

By the way, personally I have nix store on a separate volume, and I guess
that's a thing many people find convenient too. Also there is no reason to
backup your root volume, just use NixOS and backup your configuration.nix!
Anyway, things to backup are also normally on separate volumes.
