I agree.

In that state, the nixos-rebuild simple script doesn't know how to get back the
path of the "new nix", that failed to build the previous nixos, because the
old nix doesn't know how to use the new store.

I don't see a trivial solution by now, but I think that a big percent of the
nixos population has hit this issue in the last month (according to my
experience and what I saw in irc talks, mainly).

Without thinking much on it, I'd start by making "--no-build-nix" the default.
