I had some trouble with sudo and stdout redirect, so I ended up with this:
sudo mkdir -p /var/lib/nixos
curl http://nixos.org/~eelco/programs.sqlite.xz | xz -d > programs.sqlite
sudo cp programs.sqlite /var/lib/nixos/
And now it works.
[bfo at nixos:~]$ hello
The program 'hello' is currently not installed. You can install it by typing:
nix-env -i hello
