Sorry, not an answer to your question, but in case you did not know yet,
recently learned on irc:
sudo nix-pull http://hydra.nixos.org/jobset/nixpkgs/stdenv/channel/latest/MANIFEST
The server will dynamically generate the MANIFEST, it therefore takes a
bit before the download starts. But once finished you the amount of
packages you need to compile is drastically reduced.
