In case this info is helpful:

On Arch Linux (at least some Intel graphics), Linux 3.0 is pretty stable 
whereas 3.1 sometimes has blank screen from boot until the first time 
you start X.  (I tested on 3.1.2 -- it may have been fixed upstream in a 
later point release.)
