I personally don't pay too much attention to the bug tracker.
So also pasting to the mailinglist is probably a good idea.

About aix not having gnu make: Would having a cmake build system help?
I worte a partial support and someone else did so as well recently.
Both implementations would need some additional love. But if it helps ..

Or do you happen to know whether automake can recreate a makefile which
can be run by your system? Probably this is all you have to do ?
(guessing blindly)

This is my opinion only - and I only maintain two small patches for Nix
myself.
