The last time I tried gnome didn't appear. Maybe I did something wrong
- maybe gnome is kind of unmaintained currently.

Until you know you can use kde and play with NixOS. That's what I
suggested vaguely.

If you require gnome and if you don't have time to help making it work
again (if its the case that its broken) - then you should wait for
someone else doing that the work.

So maybe take a cup of coffee and wait until someone else replies
or join irc and ask there again if you don't want to wait.
