nice to see that you're still reading mails here :)
Indeed thats what I'm testing right now.
I made Nix append the -j X and -l X options to makeFlags only
if NUM_CORES was not set in a derivation (which would be an opt-out).
The second opt-out is setting num_cores = 1 in /nix/etc/nix/nix.conf
