He, you even found a workaraound.
I just tried living without git gui for now ;-)

Probably the reason is that git gui no longer likes being wrapped.

A solution could be wrapping main git instead of git-gui in libexec path.

However I didn't try it yet.

You can set this setting permanently by using --global:
$ git config --global gui.usettk false
