about the real time kernel work finally heading for merging?
I mention it because for professional audio, using jack for example; a
real time kernel is a must. (You'd also want a real time kernel if you
wanted to build a laser wielding robot controlled by Linux.) :)

I'll definitely try pulse and jack when I get NixOs installed again. I
need a bigger hdd, to do a minor hardware repair and debug the i915
driver over ssh first. I'm using debian right now mainly because I
know that I should be able to debug the i915 driver quite easily. It's
been freezing and getting worse over the last three months on whatever
distro I try (Including NixOs) And that's got to stop. At least the
vesa driver works.
