[Nix-dev] Why does environment.pathsToLink exist?

Why is this necessary?

Why don't we just use buildEnv and symlink than to /sw and be done?

Is there any benefit in beeing able to specify which paths to link ?

I'm asking because I'd like to add etc/bash_completion.d so that it's
easier to add the upstart completion file.

I'd like to get rid of this option and create a proper environment
instead.
