I'm not sure of the answer myself ("initrd is too big" doesn't sound 
like an error you ought to be having; and Grub2 is trying to move away 
from device.map but I'm not sure if it's all gone yet), but you should 
definitely ask the grub2 developers, at this mailing-list, which I read:
