Yes, I've also run into this.  (Pressing "r" a few times helps.)  I've tried
building it with an older GTK, but it didn't help.  So for now I've reverted to
an old gqview build.

OTOH, given that gqview seems unmaintained, maybe it's time to switch to another
image viewer ;-)
