host OS that has an incompatible version of those files installed -- which
is exactly the problem I'm in right now.

The same applies to /etc/bashrc. Nix uses bash 4.x. What happens when I try
to start the Nix-bash on a system that has some broken /etc/bashrc file,
because it comes from an ancient version of the package? In that case, the
user wouldn't be able to run bash! That doesn't sound right.

To me, it feels like Nix packages should ignore all paths outside of
/nix/store and /nix/var.
