3/ ?  I don't get this question. you have to rephrase.

I only can tell about vim_configurable:
The other expressions didn't quite do what I needed.

Probably we can merge them somehow.

I want to note that vim_configurable includes a patch adding minimal
.nix file support (shiftwidth=2 and syntax highlighting).
the defaults you get normally are just annoying.
