Combined with previous commit (hash change), I suppose that actually another thing happened.. For convenience of users viewing gzipped mailing list archives, server marks .gz files as transfer-encoding: gzip. Surely it didn't bother us until our fetchurl curl was actually linked against zlib; so it decided to do what it was offered to do by server, got gzipped contents and uncompressed it.
