The short answer is "yes": it has to parse and read all packages to
fetch their `name' attribute.  As Yurii mentioned, this is not necessary
with `-Ai' where you specify an attribute name rather than the actual
package name.

Besides, there was a fix recently that makes `nix-env -i' noticeably
faster.  What version are you using?
